Subway, My Way

The 1-9

I designed this graphic after watching Sesame Street with my son. The dancing subway at the end of the show reminded me that I had always dreamed of living in New York watching Sesame Street as a kid. That dream became a reality when I moved to Manhattan in 1993.

I lived at 110th between Broadway and Amsterdam. My train of choice was the 1–9; this is my homage. I’d like to see it on a t-shirt or hoodie someday.

I found a photo of the train online, imported it into Illustrator and traced it out using the pen tool. I then modified the line drawing with some fills and added the grid on the left to suggest both the rail lines and the skyline. The font is Akzidenz Grotesk, which is apparently the font that the transit authority uses for signage, though there’s some controversy about that.
